Because it’s a great tool to get more exposure for yourself or your products. Twitter is a great marketing tool for making sales. But how can you use it? Surely your friends who follow you already know about you so they already know you and your products right?
True.

There’s more to it than that though. Twitter is a little viral tool just waiting for you to cash in on it. Imagine you have your ten friends following you, and they have their ten friends each who can all see that they are following you too. Then they might decide to see why their friend is following you on Twitter. So they also follow you. Then their friends can also see them following you and do the same. Before long you can have hundreds of people reading your Tweet (the short posts you make on Twitter are called Tweets).

So now you have an audience of followers reading your Tweets, and it’s growing exponentially as more followers followers start following you. Now you can keep them interested, and also add in the odd Tweet about your website or blog where they can find out about or even buy your product. Each time you Tweet and these followers all read it, they could be clicking on your link to a sales page or informative articles with affiliate products in.

There is of course a balance to be found, and you will need to keep the interest of your followers or they will stop reading your Tweets, but if you can keep your followers happy and keep adding more interesting Tweets then you can really use Twitter as a very effective sales tool. Scams

Some people use the word ’scam’ whenever they are unhappy with something they have purchased but this is unfair. The word implies that you have been intentionally deceived and defrauded. This is rare but it does occasionally happen.

Examples of scams are where you paid for a product that does not exist, or someone offers you coaching and never provides it. You can usually avoid these situations by checking online forums for reports on the product or service that you are considering. Be especially careful if the product or service is expensive.

Outdated Methods

When you are browsing ways to make money online you may come across some business ideas that are based on outdated methods. The internet changes very fast and any online business must be flexible in order to adapt to it.

For example a few years ago it was possible to make a lot of money with Adsense websites that automatically created thousands of nonsense pages to attract traffic from every imaginable keyword. Then the search engines wised up, the traffic dropped and the Adsense rules tightened up.

That does not mean that you cannot make money from Adsense any more. You certainly can. But you have to do it in a way that works right now, not a way that worked in 2005.

Is It A Business?

Many people make money online working for others. This can be any type of task from writing website content to working in customer support. Many people are happy doing this type of work but it cannot really be described as a business. Somebody is employing you, even if you never meet them.

There is a fine line between being working for somebody else from home and running a small business with one employee (you). My definition of the difference turns on who sets the price. Are they paying an amount that you either accept or don’t (they own the business) or are you setting the price and accepting clients who take it (you own the business)?

Where To Find Online Business Ideas

The best way to find online business ideas is to observe actual successful online businesses. Many people will offer to teach you to make money online with their ebooks and products but you can often learn more from watching how they sell this service to you.

Even better, visit a site where websites are bought and sold to see the exact ways that the owners are making money from these sites. It is hard to get an idea of the money making potential of a website just by looking at it, but someone who is selling you the site will tell you exactly how much money it makes and how.

You can see sites for sale at forums like Sitepoint and Digital Point. Look at the established sites for sale and click through to the details. The owners will often provide PDF downloads of reports where they explain their money making methods.

There is a huge variety of money making websites available to buy. Even if you do not want to buy a business but build your own, visiting these sites will spark off a ton of ideas for you. Be sure to write them down because the details  of these legitimate internet businesses will disappear after the sites are sold.

What do I mean by that? Good question. What I mean is that you want to look for a business that will not be affected by the recession, or even better, a business that will actually grow during the recession.

One example is dealing in used goods. When people are low on cash they will be buying more used items. So if you always dreamed of setting up a store that sells good but used kids’ clothing, for example, right now is probably a good time to do it.

But running a store in your local area takes capital to pay for the premises and requires a lot of knowledge about running a business, from consumer law to hiring staff. That is enough to put off many people.

A better idea would be something that you can do from home without any staff or overheads. Something that you can be making money while you learn the business. So what is an example of this? Selling or promoting goods on the internet.

We are so lucky to be having this recession right now. Does that sound crazy? It’s not, because this is the one time in history when there is a huge exploding market that is not going to be affected by a downturn in the economy. People are going to be buying more online because it’s cheaper.

Take the example of used clothing. Selling your stock online instead of from a bricks and mortar store means that you do not need any capital, you do not need any staff, people can buy 24/7 and you just deal with the orders whenever you want. What’s more, your customer base is not limited to the people who live in your town and pass by your store. You have billions of potential customers all over the world.

But better still, you do not even have to sell anything yourself. You can earn money online in many other ways. For example, you can be an affiliate, earning money by promoting a company’s goods for a commission. Set up a few websites doing this, drive visitors to them and you could soon be earning regular checks.

Even in the luxury goods markets, some people are still buying but they will be looking around for the best deal. So the best way to make money in a recession from luxury goods is to find the best deal and put it in front of your website visitors.

For this reason it is important to act as a representative from your company at all times.

Choosing banners
With most affiliate programs, you are offered a variety of banners to plan on your website, as very few of them will be effective.  The problems with most banners are their size.  If you choose a banner that is high in size, it will take a long time to implement and use.  Therefore, it’s recommended that you use banners no more than 15kb in size.

When you select any types of graphical advertising, you should try and keep the theme of your website in mind.  Even though graphical ads are meant to stand out and catch people’s eye, they shouldn’t be to the point where everything else on the page is completely ignored. 

Pop ups and unders
A lot of companies will now give their affiliates the chance of using pop up or pop under ads.  In most opinions, pop ups aren’t the way to go.  They can easily annoy visitors and are normally closed before they even have the chance to load.  You should instead go for pop unders and those types that only display once per visit.

Text link ads
Once of the most successful means of advertisting is text link ads.  They are easy on bandwidth, don’t use a lot of space, and they easily be implemented into most types of page layouts.  Good text links offer some information as to why your visitor should investigate your offers. 

Email advertising
The direct promotion via email has really taken off over the last several years, although it has brought tons of spam with it. If you plan to use email as a method of advertising your products, you should stand behind what you sell and make yourself available to answer any questions.

Patience
If you feel confident that your site can generate great sales for certain company’s, you should contact them to negotiate an arrangement.  If they don’t seem to enthused to begin with, you should remain patient as companies are approaced every day with affiliates looking to make better deals.

The reality remains that most affiliates can’t deliver what they promise, and companies are aware of this. 

You should always keep in mind that most forms of advertising will take time.  No matter what methods you plan to use, give it some time before you make any type of decision. Although something may not happen overnight - it very well could in a few days or weeks.

But there are alternatives to Paypal, and choice is a good thing where customers are concerned. For starters Paypal is still not available everywhere in the world, and some people still won’t use it even where it is. Offering an alternative payment option will obviously allow many more of your potential customers to buy from you when Paypal isn’t an option.

So what are the alternative payment choices?

Obviously you could get your own merchant account and process credit and debit cards for yourself, this would involve contacting a bank, and arranging the services with them, as long as your software can integrate with their systems. Another alternative for accepting payments is 2Checkout (http://www.2checkout.com ) they do charge a fee up front to join, but 2checkout is widely supported in shopping cart software. With 2 checkout you can accept cheques, credit and debit cards, and in addition they now offer affiliate facilities so you can sell your products and services through an affiliate network.

Another widely used online payment option is Clickbank, who accept payments from many different sources on your behalf. Again there is a small fee to set up a vendor account at Clickbank, and there are limits on maximum prices (you can request higher maximum limits, and they are quick to respond to requests). Another plus for Clickbank, is that they have lots of affiliates using their system, and if you offer a good quality product many of them may begin promoting it for the commissions you set when you add your product. A negative on Clickbank’s scoresheet, is that you can only sell one product from the account without using a script to redirect to others, although there are scripts available to do this and Clickbank does allow quite a lot of products on an account but only one salespage.

There is another alternative payment option which we just discovered, and which may help you to make more sales with an innovative way of giving everyone a win win deal. It’s called TrialPay and it’s ingenious in the way it works. As a merchant you can now offer your products for free, but still get paid. As a customer, your purchasers now needn’t spend money they don’t want to on your products, but still get them. If you have, or if you haven’t then there maybe some things you would like to know about niche marketing online as a way of making an income. So without further filler or fluff, here are some basics to hekp you get started with niche marketing.

We’ll start with the question what is a niche, and how do I market it?

A niche is just a small gap. For our purposes this gap is a potential area where we can sell (market) products into. Usually these niches are based around hobbies and passtimes people enjoy. By tailoring products to a small niche group we can usually find an untapped market where we have less competition, especially online where everyone looks to see if there is any information about their favourite hobby.

To make money from a niche market we first have to find one, if you have a hobby and know a bit about it, that could be a starting point for researching a niche. Lets take a hobby like e.g. Golf. Now if you take a look at golf in any search engine, book store or library there are tons of books, dvd’s, etc. aimed at golfers. But that doesn’t mean you couldn’t find a niche in the golf market.

Drill down into golfing, and you can find gaps which maybe you could fill with an information product. Maybe you are left handed, and can help left handed golfers perfect their swing. I haven’t looked at it, I know nothing about golfing personally, but there maybe other groups of people with difficulties playing golf.

The golf thing is just an example, any hobby, or passtime could be an open playing field for the right information product to fill a niche in the market, fishing, crochet, cooking etc. All you need to do is find a small market which not many people have looked at and fill a gap with your information product.

You don’t even need to be an expert, some people are just starting out in a new hobby, and there may not be a decent introductory book to help them get started. Kinda like the “… for Dummies”(C)(TM) series of books, that is a perfect example of finding niches and filling the gaps with a marketable product. Those books take a subject and make it understandable for the layman (or dummies) by explaining the jargon.

Now all you need to do is find your own niche (remember if you have a hobby you can start there) and fill any gap you can see with your own product. Information products are easy to create and then sell online. You could even look for a product with resale rights, although then you will be in competition with others who buy the rights.

Get going in a small way, spending about an hour a day. Try it out before you commit to something.
Analyze if you like doing the work after a period of about 1-2 months and see the extra income you earn. If you think that the work is suited to you and the work has enough potential to earn you the extra income that you were targeting for, try to spend more time and energy on it to increase that extra income. If you see that you really don’t enjoy it, shift the focus to the second opportunity on the list.
Remember these opportunities are basically work being done for other professionals and they have to be treated with professionalism and care. You cannot take them lying back and expect returns. The only advantage is that you will be doing what you love to do and get paid handsomely for it.
